For K Pop Superstar Jin, Bts Military Service Has Begun
YEONCHEON, South Korea - Jin, senior member of K-pop supergroup BTS, began his frontline 18-month mandatory military service at a South Korean military camp on Tuesday as fans gathered near the base to say goodbye to their star.
Six other younger BTS members are set to join the military in the following years, meaning the world's biggest boy band would have to take a break, likely for a few years. Their favorites have fueled a fierce domestic debate over whether it's time to rethink the country's ticketing system to extend exemptions to high-profile guests like BTS, or to stop offering such benefits to anyone.
With lawmakers squabbling in parliament and public opinion polls sharply divided over whether to offer exemptions to BTS members, the administration's agency said in October that all BTS members would serve their mandatory military service. Big Hit Music said that both the company and the members of BTS "look forward to seeing the group again around 2025 after their service commitment."
Jin, who turned 30 earlier this month, will be at a boot camp in Yeoncheon, a city near North Korea's border, for five weeks of basic military training along with other new recruits, the defense ministry said. After rifle training, grenade throwing and driving exercises, he and other conscripts would be deployed in the army across the border.
Bts' Jin Won't Receive Fan Mail During Military Service? Here's What Officials Have To Say
About 20-30 fans - some with pictures of Jin - and dozens of reporters were gathered near the camp. But Jin didn't meet them as the vehicle carrying him into the boot camp moved without letting him out.
"I will wait (for) Jin and see him enter the military and wish him the best," Mandy Lee of Hong Kong said before Jin's entrance into the camp.
"Yes, it's ugly. I want to be sad. I want to be happy for him," said Angelina from Indonesia. "With mixed mind. he must serve (for) his country." Angelina, like many Indonesians, uses only one name.
Considering the small attendance of two dozen fans, Jin's popularity could be seen as immense. However, Jin and his management had previously asked fans not to visit the site and informed them not to disrupt any special event attended by the singer.

Authorities still have 300 police officers, soldiers, emergency workers and others to maintain order and against any accidents, according to the army. The tighter security measures were expected as South Korea was still reeling from the Halloween devastation that killed 158 people in Seoul in October.
Hours before entering the camp, Jin - whose real name is Kim Seok-jin - wrote on the film platform Weverse that, "It's time for a screen call." She posted a photo of herself with a military buzzcut and a message that said: "Ha ha ha. Cuter than I thought."
Bts Star Jin To Begin Military Service In December; Bts Army Expresses Concern About Singer's Safety
By law, all able-bodied South Korean men must serve in the military for 18-21 months under a conscription system set up to deal with North Korean threats. The law also provides special exemptions for athletes, classical and traditional musicians, mimes and other dancers if they have won top prizes in certain competitions to enhance their national reputation. K-pop stars and other guests do not receive such benefits, even if they gain worldwide fame and receive major international awards.
"Even though the BTS members chose to join the military, there are still some wishes," said Jung Duk-hyun, a pop culture commentator. "Those in the pop culture sector have little experience with discomfort and inequality compared to those in the art world or athletes. I wonder if it will be as controversial if it continues to be discussed."
Vacations or evasion of duty are highly sensitive in South Korea, where young conscripts suspend their studies or professional careers. Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup and Lee Ki Sik, South Korea's chief of staff, previously said it would be "desirable" for BTS members to perform their military duties to ensure fairness in service to the country.
Chun In-bum, the retired lieutenant general who commanded South Korea's special forces, said the government should move to lift any immunity as the military's recruitment pool is a "very serious" problem amid the country's declining fertility. He called the discussion about BTS's military service "unnecessary" because it was not raised by BTS members who showed their willingness to perform their duties.

Hybe Corp., Big Hit's parent company, said in October that each band is currently engaged in individual activities related to their military work schedules. In October, Jin released "The Astronaut", a single written by Coldplay.
Commentator Jung said that selling projects could give BTS members a lot of time to develop after working together as a group for many years. But Cha Woo-jin, a K-pop commentator, said it's unclear whether BTS will enjoy the same popularity as a group when they reunite after a few years of military service.
In August, Lee, the defense minister, said serving BTS members would likely be allowed to train and continue to join other non-serving BTS members on overseas group trips.
